The first episode of Disney XD's "DuckTales" is without question a great way to relaunch an amazing franchise that spans decades. Going way back to the comics, the original Disney Afternoon show, and now this new on-going series. It's really amazing what you can accomplish with a bunch of cartoon ducks.
The basic set up is already something familiar, but it's the smaller touches that really brings it all together. Scrooge is a miserly old bitter and lonely former adventurer who meets his rebellious young nephews who get his heart pumping once again for more action and adventure as the world's richest duck.
What makes this series special already though are the characters having their own distinct personalities and story-arcs. It reminds me a lot of "Gravity Falls" because of it's multi-layered character based storytelling. The actual adventures almost seem meaningless at this point because we're so focused on how the Duck family interacts with one another. Even Webby breaks free of her original annoying little sister role and becomes a wide-eyed world explorer. It's all such a big relief.
I'm still not all on board for some of the new voices, but I'm sure they''ll grow on me. And, I like knowing that this show takes place in a world where the mystic elements are already known by the populace so there's no need to try and prove anything to anyone when it comes to the occult. They exist in a world filled with magic and wonder, and we know that they know that, and that's awesome. I also like how they trivialize some mystical elements. They discover Atlantis in the second episode and it's not that big of a deal.
Definitely keep your eyes open for this show when it airs, it's going to be a big deal. And don't forget to watch the premiere episode that currently on YouTube for free. It's definitely worth your time.
