So I don't know much about "Starship Troopers" outside of the 1990's movie. I watched a bit of the cartoon series back when it was on Sci-Fi Channel (now Syfy), but that's really it. I never read the book, or books (I'm not really sure if it's a series), or watched any of the sequels. But one thing sort of bothered me.
Sometime back a friend and I saw a RiffTraxx screening of "Starship Troopers", and I started to wonder something; are the bugs actual the victims? I can't really put my finger on it, but it feels like the humans are the aggressors during the whole film. The bugs show signs of intelligence, and might exist in a society we can't understand, but I suppose they could have a culture of their very own. Why exactly were we at war with them again?
Of course this could just be my bias, I always root for the monster in any sci-fi or horror film. But the bugs in "Starship Troopers" are so mysterious, at least in the film, and they're given very little backstory, so I guess I could be projecting a bit with my assessment, but I'm not sure. Maybe I'll give the movie a rewatch sometime soon and really try to pick it apart.
